If you’re wondering how to improve your productivity, become more of a morning person. Don’t take our word for it; science says a structured morning routine makes you more successful. A Harvard biologist researched the issue and found early risers get more done and solve problems more efficiently. Another study showed morning people are happier, and that makes them more productive at work. We have some tips about how becoming more of a morning person will make you a powerhouse on the job.

Do These Things First in the Mornings

There are countless stories online about how the world’s most successful people use their mornings well, which sets them up for greater success throughout the day. Some of the tips that are out there are good ones. For example, start your morning routine by selecting the hardest things from your to-do list that day. Do those tasks first because mornings generally are quieter with fewer interruptions. You have more energy and your mental reserves will be higher.

Exercise is high on the list of things that morning people do to make themselves more productive. Harvard Medical School reports that working out releases a neurotrophic factor chemical in your brain that boosts its function. If you work out and then tackle the toughest thing on your list that day, the chances are high that you will increase your output and get the job done well.

It’s also a good idea to plan out your day the night before. If you don’t want to map out your actual calendar, try writing down the top three things you want to do the next day. Of course, start with the toughest thing first, but you could even include personal to-do’s like paying a bill or taking a walk. The point is that you set goals in advance so that you wake up ready to tackle three productive items on your list. That way you’ll accomplish three things each day. You can even use this same technique on the weekends or your days off to get more done.

Eat breakfast. Even if you’re not a breakfast person, you can work out then eat a protein-packed breakfast to fuel your day. This jump-starts your system in a way that keeps your mind focused and energized.

Do not be distracted by your email. Humans actually are not terrific at multitasking, despite the fact that almost everyone says they are. One study showed that just 2.5% of people can multitask effectively. So, forget what you think you know about your ability to check email while doing two other things simultaneously. One way to kick off a super productive day is to carve out specific times throughout the day to check and respond to email. It’s easier to get sucked into an email so make sure you be deliberate in your attempts to even look at your inbox. Focus on the tasks at hand and beware of trying to do several things at once.
